Don't think it was mutual... The Malinois is by nature a wary creature. But, when the Malinois accepts you and bonds with you, you couldn't ask for a more loving and protective dog.
Most Malinois that I know are extremely attached to their human and their human family. I have no doubt that Ruger would give his life for us - in my opinion, there is no breed that is braver or more loyal. Many of the Malinois are used for police work and military work, and it's not a surprise that their handlers become very attached to the dog.
The Malinois is smart and agile. They are not appropriate for home where they could potentially be smarter than their owners! A Malinois will figure things out - like where the cat food is hidden, or how to open cabinets! This is one reason why I believe Ruger does great with SAR and cadaver work. They have excellent scent discrimination - Ruger is able to discern human scent from animal and stay focused on the job at hand.
A well-bred Malinois is a fast and sturdy dog. You would think that being a shorter haired bred they'd be susceptible to cold, but they are very hardy and rarely become ill.
Be sure to start socializing your Malinois early. With my female, I took her to puppy classes and handling classes and to many many dog shows. She's a trooper and loves attention. But don't let that wagging tail fool you - she is every bit as protective as my male. Both dogs will wait for a signal... First they are told to 'watch', and that means to be on guard. They wait for a signal that it's time to go in or bite, or attack (which is different for each handler and each dog). The amazing thing is that just as they learn scent discrimination, they also understand when they are at a show or a meet and greet or doing Search and Rescue versus when they need to be wary and on guard.
I know my Belgian Malinois love me because their eyes are always following where I am and what I am doing. Even while in a sit stay or down stay, they are very focused on their human... Not in an insecure way, but in a protective, loving way.
If you ever have the opportunity to own a Malinois, I'd highly recommend searching out a reputable breeder. My dogs are both out of Broadcreek, and I've been extremely pleased with the professionalism of the kennel and the quality and temperament of the dogs.
